Getting Ahead with Okmulgee Bridges

When much of your energy goes toward getting through today, planning for the future can feel difficult. Getting Ahead offers time, tools, and a supportive group to help you explore your situation and decide what you want to work toward.

You can start by learning more. You don't have to be ready to join a class to contact us.

What is Getting Ahead?

Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin'-By World is a small-group program for people who want to build greater stability in their lives.

Through guided discussions and practical activities, you'll explore the challenges of getting by, recognize the resources and strengths you already have, and develop your own plan for the future. Your experiences and ideas are an important part of the group's learning.

Participants are called investigators because they investigate their own circumstances, their community, and the possibilities ahead.

What will we explore?

Together, we will explore:

  • The challenges of getting ahead: What makes it difficult to move forward and how personal circumstances and community conditions affect your choices.

  • Resources and strengths: The relationships, knowledge, skills, health, finances, and other resources that support stability.

  • Managing daily challenges: Ways to handle everyday difficulties and create more room to plan for the future.

  • Your goals: The support you may need and practical steps toward the future you want.

You don't need to have everything figured out before you begin.

What does participation involve?

Getting Ahead meets weekly on Thursday evenings for approximately 18 weeks.

Regular attendance matters because the discussions build on one another, and everyone contributes to the group.

Sessions include dinner, guided activities, and conversations with fellow investigators and volunteer facilitators.

To help make participation possible

Okmulgee Bridges provides:

  • Free dinner for participants and their families, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

  • Free on-site childcare during class sessions.

  • A $25 stipend for each class session attended.

  • A supportive small-group setting where everyone can contribute and learn together.

If transportation or another concern could make attendance difficult, let us know so we can discuss what support may be available.

When is the next class?

Getting Ahead classes typically begin in January and August.

Our next class is planned to begin in January 2027. Exact dates, session times, and location will be shared as plans are confirmed.

We welcome inquiries throughout the year.
